Tsuruya Shoten’s Hantai Tamago boiled eggs
A Hirayu Onsen specialty! Popular “Hantai Tamago” eggs boiled in the natural hot spring of Tsuru-no-Yu
Boiled eggs are a classic item offered by many hot spring resorts. However, the Hantai Tamago offered by the shop Tsuruya Shoten has a flavor that is just a little different from others. What does hantai mean in English: opposite, or reversed? We’ll leave that unexplained, and you won’t find out until you actually crack open one of the eggs yourself. To make Hantai Tamago, the temperature of the cooking water should be maintained between 65 – 70℃.
“Hantai Tamago” is boiled in Tsuru-no-Yu hot spring waters that well up in front of the shop. It tastes delicious, with a slightly salty flavor. You must try one! When you eat it on the spot, you’ll need to pay first in the store (50 yen per egg). It is recommended to crack open the upper third of the egg, and then slurp the contents as you gradually peel the remaining eggshell.
Tsuruya Shoten is located near the Hirayu Bus Terminal, with a red mail post box and wooden signboard as landmarks. It serves as the town’s convenience store. Not only are various souvenirs available, but also liquor and snacks for evening enjoyment. Quite a few tourists do some shopping there on the way back to their hotel. In addition, the shop also sells skin lotion and moisturizer into which is blended hot spring water from the original source of Tsuru-no-Yu. These products have justifiably earned a good reputation for achieving smooth skin.
