Magnificent views of the Northern Alps from Japan’s only double-decker ropeway
Shinhotaka Ropeway is known for its unique double-decker gondola lifts, a type of lift not found anywhere else in Japan. From the observatory on the roof of Nishihotakaguchi Station, 2,156-meters up, you can see the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps), including Mt. Kasa, Mt. Yari, the Hotaka mountain range, and Mt. Yake, as well as the Hakusan mountain range in the distance.
In 2020, the double-decker gondola of Ropeway No.2 was renovated to commemorate their 50th anniversary. The seasonal stargazing rides at night allow visitors to take in the night sky and stars.
Shinhotaka Visitor Center “Sangakukan” is a mountain and nature-themed exhibition hall by the ropeway’s way station. Here, visitors can learn about the nature of Okuhida and enjoy seasonal activities, such as guided walks through Shinhotaka and snowshoe tours.
At the open-air bath Kamitakara no Yu, next to the Shinhotaka Visitor Center “Sangakukan” , you can enjoy a relaxing dip in a 100% natural hot spring bath after a day of activities and “flying” across the Northern Alps.
