Okuhida Onsengo

Okuhida Onsengo

Okuhida Onsengo, located in the center of the Japanese archipelago on the Gifu side of Chubusangaku National Park, is a hot spring resort surrounded by famous peaks, such as Mt. Yari, the Hotaka mountain range, Mt.Norikura, and Mt. Kasa. It consists of five hot spring towns: Hirayu Onsen, Fukuji Onsen, Shinhirayu Onsen, Tochio Onsen, and Shinhotaka Onsen.
Hirayu Onsen and Shinhotaka Onsen are designated as national parks, and Okuhida Onsengo as a whole is designated as a National Hot Spring Health Resort by the Ministry of the Environment.
Okuhida Onsengo is one of the best hot spring resorts in Japan, boasting more than 100 hot springs and the largest number of open-air baths in Japan. What’s more, each of its five hot spring towns has its own water source with unique characteristics: transparent, brown, green, cloudy, etc. The qualities vary across the hot spring towns and facilities. Some inns even use water from several different hot spring sources so visitors may casually enjoy high-quality hot spring water.
Since the opening of the Abo Tunnel connecting Gifu and Nagano prefectures in 1997, access from the Kanto area has become very convenient, and with many famous sightseeing spots such as Hida-Takayama, Mt. Norikura and Kamikochi in the vicinity, the area is often crowded with tourists as it acts as a transportation hub that connects the different attractions.
